The construction of Baneshwar Temple is credited to Sardar Khanderao Dabhade, a devotee of Shiva who built several Shiva temples in the area, with completion occurring in the early 18th century. The temple is situated in a beautifully serene environment, featuring a Nandi Mandapa in front and an impressive tank (Pushkarni), locally referred to as Naske Tale. Surprisingly, the temple seems to be off the beaten tourist path, meaning you are likely to have the entire site to yourself, enhancing the tranquil experience.

Just north of the Baneshwar Temple, hidden beneath the trees and likely overlooked by many visitors, lies the Samadhi of Sarsenapati Khanderao Dabhade. This fascinating mausoleum features reddish-orange relief carvings that, while not intricately detailed, are well-crafted and adorn the exterior on all four sides of the main platform.

A hidden gem called Baman Doh can be found just 50 meters northwest of the Samadhi of Sarsenapati Khanderao Dabhade, tucked away in a small patch of woodland. Located about 10 meters south of an east-west railway track, Baman Doh is a small stepwell. A short flight of steps leads down to a circular pool, accompanied by a passageway lined with archways along one side. While some efforts have been made to clear the vegetation around the structure, it’s evident that this site has largely been forgotten.

Ghumatachi Vihir, along with the Kedareshwar Mandir, is a hidden treasure located within a private bungalow society in Talegaon Dabhade. It remains relatively uncrowded as most people are unaware of its existence, making it a serene and peaceful spot. The site is only open to visitors from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm. The stepwell is beautifully designed and resembles a key when viewed from above. Additionally, there is a Mahadev temple situated just above the well, adding to its spiritual significance.

It’s worth mentioning a group of Samadhis lining the road to Baneshwar Temple, one of which belongs to Sarsenapati Umabai Dabhade, the youngest wife of Khanderao Dabhade. She made history as the first and only woman to serve as the Commander-in-Chief of the Maratha forces in 1732. Umabai passed away on November 28, 1753, at Nadgemodi in Pune.

The Pach Pandav Temple in Talegaon Dabhade is unique as the only temple in Maharashtra dedicated to the Pandavas. Inside, the five Pandava brothers are depicted worshipping the sun facing east, while their wife, Draupadi, is shown resting in an adjacent room, watching the sunrise through a window. Numerous legends suggest that the Pandavas constructed various structures before daybreak during their 14-year exile.

Kundmala is located along the banks of the Indrayani River in Talegaon, Pune, just 1 km from Begadewadi railway station, where local trains stop. The area is lined with several snack shops on both sides of the riverbank. At the site, you’ll find a waterfall, potholes, and a temple. It’s a great spot for a short half-day trip or picnic with friends and family. Highly recommended for a visit!

Ghoradeshwar and Shelarwadi Caves are a small group of rock-cut caves located about 32 km northwest of Pune, near the old Mumbai-Pune highway. There are multiple routes to climb the hill, with two being the most popular—one via stairs and the other through a hiking trail. If you’re coming from Pune, you’ll first encounter the hiking route on your left. Although this route is officially closed, with the entrance gate locked, people often park outside and climb over the gate to access it. The trail is easy, as many people hike it daily. At the top, there’s a vast plateau with a saffron flag flying high.

The second route is by stairs, which take you halfway up, after which a hiking trail leads to the temple. There are around 4-5 temples in total, including a Mahadev temple, Vitthal temple, and several Buddhist caves. Ghorawdeshwar is one of the three places where Sant Tukaram Maharaj used to meditate. You can also visit Kundmala, located just across the highway.

The trek to Chaurai Devi Mandir is a brief and straightforward 30-minute walk. Shaded by an abundance of trees, the trail offers a refreshing experience. At the summit, you’ll enjoy a charming view of the city, and the temple, though modest in size, is stunningly perched on the edge.
