Discovering the Ancient Wonders of Bhuj and Dholavira: A March 2023 Journey

In March 2023, I joined a group tour to explore the cultural and historical treasures of Bhuj and Dholavira. This journey through Gujarat’s Kutch region was a blend of traditional crafts, ancient civilizations, and vibrant landscapes. Here’s a recount of our adventure, filled with unique experiences and memories.

Day 1: Journey from Pune to Bhuj

Our trip began with an overnight train journey from Borivali station, Mumbai, to Bhuj on the Bhuj AC SF Express. With the excitement of the adventure ahead, we rested and prepared for our arrival in Kutch.

Day 2: Arrival in Bhuj and Exploring Local Crafts

Upon reaching Bhuj, we checked in at the Fern Residency, where a refreshing lunch awaited us.

Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring Bhujodi, a crafts village renowned for its traditional weaving and handicrafts. The market was a colorful mix of fabrics, handloom products, and intricate artifacts. We spent the evening immersing ourselves in the vibrant local crafts, wrapping up the day with a delightful dinner at the resort.

Day 3: The Archaeological Marvel of Dholavira

After breakfast, we set out on a scenic drive to Dholavira, one of the most significant archaeological sites of the Harappan civilization. We toured the museum, which houses fascinating artifacts, pottery, and remnants from ancient times, and then explored the site itself, a testament to the architectural and engineering prowess of our ancestors.

En route, we took in the breathtaking views of the White Sand Desert, a sight that beautifully captured the essence of Kutch’s unique landscape. The day ended with a relaxing dinner back at the resort.

Day 4: Living Craft Traditions and Local Artistry

Our fourth day began with a visit to the Living and Learning Design Centre (LLDC), a hub dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional crafts. We were captivated by the intricate craftsmanship displayed and the museum’s commitment to educating visitors on these age-old arts.

In the afternoon, we traveled to Ajrakhpur Village, famed for its Ajrakh block printing.

After a lunch at Fern Residency, we visited the Khamir Craft Centre and Hunnarshala, two organizations that showcase the crafts and architectural techniques indigenous to Kutch.
